Holiday Fall and Winter Poetry
This list includes fall and fall holiday poetry. Thanks to my friends on grade_one for
most of them. I used some of them in my first grade class in my classroom last year to
create a poetry book. The children worked on two or three a week until Christmas. We would
read the poems aloud and discuss them. They then illustrated them.
Before the holidays all the poems were collated into a nice book that I bound. These were
then holiday gifts for the families.
Together
When we work and play together
In a kind and friendly way
Taking turns and sharing playthings
We will have a happy day.

I love winter! Winter is cold.
It's Christmas with sleds.
It's warm snuggly beds.
It's silver snowflakes.
It's skating on lakes.
It's snowmen that stand
In a snowy white land.
It's bluejays that feed
On sunflower seed.
It's angels that pose
In wintertime clothes.
It's a polka-dot sky.
It's winter. That's why.......
I love winter.

Thanksgiving Chant
by Leland B. Jacobs
Turkey
And dressing;
Potatoes piled high;
Gravy,
And salad,
And three kinds of pie;
Who
Could be grumpy
Or troublesome
When
Thanksgiving dinner
Is ready
Again?

Thanksgiving
by Carol Quinn
"Come to our feast,"
The Pilgrims said,
"Wild turkey and maize
With yams and bread,
Nuts and wild berries,
Pumpkin pie, too
We'll give our thanks
And welcome you."
"For our Thanksgiving,"
Grandmother said,
"There's turkey and corn,
Sweet potatoes and bread,
Cranberries, nuts
And pumpkin pie.
We'll feast like the Pilgrims
In days gone by."
Here's a cute interactive poem about animals preparing for winter.
Hibernation
Where do the ____ go when leaves turn red?
They crawl in the ____ and go to bed.
They hibernate, they hibernate,
And they don't come out 'til Spring.

The Wishbone
Wishbone, wishbone on a dish,
Pick it up and make a wish.
If I pull the wishbone right,
I will get my wish tonight...
Wishbone, wishbone, will I win?
Will I laugh and clap and grin?
When the wishbone snaps in two,
Will my wishbone wish come true?
Wishbone, wishbone,
Now it snaps,
My sister grins and laughs and claps.
Wishbone, wishbone, I don't laugh,
My sister got the bigger half.
(I give the kids a sheet with a large wishbone drawn on it and have them
draw what they would wish for on it. I also bring in a real wishbone for
them to see.)

I Ate Too Much
I ate too much turkey,
I ate too much corn,
I ate too much pudding and pie,
I'm stuffed up with muffins
and much too much stuffin'
I'm probably going to die.
I piled up my plate
and I ate and I ate,
but I wish I had known when to stop,
for I'm so crammed with yams
that my buttons are starting to pop!
I'm full of tomatoes
and french fried potatoes,
my stomach is swollen and sore,
but there's still some dessert,
so I guess it won't hurt
if I eat just a little bit more!
Winter Riddle
It comes in winter
Soft and light
And powders everything in sight
>From treetops
To the ground below.
What does these things
Of magic? Snow!
----------------------
The Snow
Soft and quiet,
Soft and slow,
Down it falls
The feathery snow.
-------------------
After it snows
I go and lie on things;
I lie on my back
And make snow-angel wings.
----------------------------
Snow
The snow fell softly all the night
It made a blanket soft and white.
It covered houses, flowers and ground,
But it didn't make a single sound!
---------------------
Snow
The fence posts wear marshmallow hats
On a snowy day:
Bushes in their nightgowns
Are kneeling down to pray -
And all the trees have silver skirts
And want to dance away.
---------------------
Winter Birds
I can't go visit a snowbird -
I don't know where he stays.
I can't go visit a chickadee -
He has such flitty ways.
I can't go visit a blue jay
Atop a snowy tree,
And so I scatter seeds around
And have them visit ME.
---------------------
Remembrance Day
We wear a poppy
On Remembrance Day,
And at eleven
We stand and pray.
Wreaths are put
Upon a grave.
As we remember
Our soldiers brave.
--------------------
Santa's Spill
Christmas time was here,
Everything was white,
Santa Claus was on his way
One dark and stormy night.
Look up and see what happened
Way up in the sky;
Santa's sleigh tipped over,
And he fell from way up high.
All the toys came tumbling
Over the little town.
Santa used his empty bag
To parachute right down.
On merry Christmas morning
Santa hurried away
Before the children should wake up
And all come out to play.
-------------------------------
My Color For Christmas
Red is my color for Christmas
Red as the candles gay
Red as the suit that Santa Claus wears
On this happy day.
Green is my color for Christmas
Green as the Christmas tree
Green as the wreaths in the windows
For everyone to see.
Gold is my color for Christmas
Bright as the Christmas star
Gold as the gift the Wise Men brought
From the lands afar.
White is my color for Christmas
White as the new fallen snow
White as the robes of the angels
Who sang so long ago.
-------------------------
December
Trimming trees in stocking feet
Eating all we want to eat
Giving presents to our friends
This is how the whole year ends.
---------------------------
What is in my stocking?
A present with a bow -
A candy cane, a tiny game,
An orange in the toe!
------------------------
Santa comes
To bring us toys
Giving us many
Christmas joys.
-----------------------
December
In December we're happy
Whatever the weather
For Christmas helps people
Be happy together.
A carpet of snow
Covers the ground,
The sweet sound of carols
Is heard all around.
Candles and stars
And Christmas tree lights
Twinkle and glow
In the velvet night.-
