Our
Mitten
![]()
I started our 10 day (kinder is 1/2 day) project by voting on the order of which we will read the books. Since the students had heard Jan Brett's version of The Mitten, during our December Jan Brett Bash, they chose the Mystery of the Missing Red Mitten first. Next, we read the Mitten Tree and then the Old Man's Mittens. We wound up the four stories with rereading Jan Brett's Mitten...
As we
read each book we completed a chart entry on the four main elements of the stories, so we
could compare/contrast them when we were done.

During
Writer's Workshop we brainstormed words to describe mittens.

We
created a class book using the descriptive words we had brainstormed describing mittens.
During
several math lessons we used mitten animal characters to formulate simple addition
problems. Students took turns coming up to the overhead projector (yes! these graphics
work wonderful overhead) and creating their own problems for the others in the class to
solve.

There were two rabbits in the mitten.
When the bear decided to crawl in.
How many animals are in the mitten now?

We
voted for our favorite book among the four that we read.
We
began out pictionary...with the word "mitten". Each student chose a winter word
to illustrate. They were then attached to a five by eight index card. Mrs. Goudie's wrote
the "word" at the bottom for us to use in our stories. This is our very own
pocket chart word wall filled with seasonal (and other very necessary words).

| Ten Warm Mittens
Ten warm mittens, hanging on the line, One blows away and then there are nine. Nine warm mittens, one without a mate, A squirrel carries one away and that leaves eight. Eight warm mittens, just eight not eleven, One gets buried in the snow and that leaves seven. Seven warm mittens, which one do you pick? I'll pick the red one and that leaves six. Six warm mittens, put one on to try. Then you take it from the line and that leaves five. Five warm mittens, we had ten before! A fluffy bunny needs one and that leaves four! Four warm mittens, two for you and two for me, I lost one on the ski slope and that leaves three. Three warm mittens, looking very new, One falls into the mud and that leaves two. Two warm mittens, drying in the sun, A bird comes down and snatches it and that leaves one. One warm mitten, what good is one? A little mouse can have a bed, and that leaves none! |
